Overcoming Workout Relapse: A Huawei Watch 3 and Scale 3 Pro Review

by - Thursday, September 30, 2021

As we continue to deal with the changes brought by the pandemic, I easily knew I had to go easy with myself, step back, and think of ways to maintain a positive mindset. Now that I was finally able to juggle the solo-living-slash-pawrenting sitch, I realized it's time to overcome the exercise relapse and release endorphins. What better way to kickstart this by equipping myself with the new Huawei Watch 3 and Scale 3 Pro. I already shared my first impressions here, but you can read on for my full review of these devices!

Huawei Watch 3

The Huawei Watch 3 is a big step up from the GT2 Pro for many reasons. Aesthetic-wise, the sleek 3D glass technology and all-titanium body evoked premium and sophistication. It's on the thicker side, but the overall watch face size is still comfortable given the right strap adjustment.

The user also can appreciate the innovative design features of HarmonyOS 2, thanks to the 1.43 inches AMOLED color screen. Every swipe on the watch's screen meant a smooth and vibrant experience. It was fun swiping, tapping, pressing, and holding the screen, like I had a smartphone in a watch format. The fingerprint mark transfers to the screen, but it's only visible when the watch is exposed to a direct light source.

Most of the remaining parts of the watch are located at the right side of the watch—rotating crown, side button, and speaker—while the mic is on the left side. The fully rotating crown caught my attention because it made scrolling through the grid menu display and volume settings easier and accurate. There's also an option to add a shortcut for the down button. I chose Notepad and discovered that you can jot notes by recording your voice. So cool!

There are tons of watch faces pre-installed and available in the Huawei Watch Face Store for the user's convenience. In my case, I settled for two main watch faces depending on my activity. I chose a minimalist one for daily activities and another one for workouts. One can also personalize their watch by creating their own animated watch faces using 5-10s short videos from their smartphone.

This watch also allows you to stay away from your smartphone and still receive important calls and notifications. (Hello, short attention span!) Users can use the same phone number on this watch with its eSIM service. While eSIM is not yet readily available locally, I was still able to answer calls from my phone and talk to the caller through the watch in real-time.

For people like me who are looking to overcome the workout relapse, the Huawei Watch 3 makes a great all-around professional sports and health management. It has 100+ workout modes for different outdoor and indoor sports, with automatic exercise detection for the 6 most common types of workouts—all of which are recorded in the Huawei Health app.

I once biked around the neighborhood and still got a record of my activity with the route I took even if the mobile data is turned off during the ride. This watch also takes note of fatigue and the recovery time needed for your body to recuperate.

There's also an option to enable all-day monitoring of sleep, heart rate, stress test, Sp02 measurement, and skin temperature which can be easily accessed when you swipe left from the home screen. The last two health metrics are especially helpful given the pandemic situation we're in. Of course, they only serve as a reference and it's still best to get an antigen or RT-PCR test for your peace of mind!

Patty Villegas - The Lifestyle Wanderer - Huawei - Watch 3 - Battery Life

It took me around two hours to fully charge the device with the help of the charger included in the box. Compared to the GT2 Pro charger, the charging cable isn't detachable with the cradle, so I suggest lugging this charger with you when traveling.

Patty Villegas - The Lifestyle Wanderer - Huawei - Watch 3 - Ultra Long Battery Life

In terms of battery life, with the health monitoring apps enabled all day on top of occasional workouts, and timers, the watch was able to last me three to four days of power before needing to charge it. It also has an ultra-long battery life mode if you need the extra energy, especially during an emergency. With this feature, the battery will be greatly extended but it limits app access and Wi-Fi and mobile data connectivity.

Huawei Scale 3 Pro

To be able to hit the right fitness goals, one must have an idea first of their current body state. In this case, the Huawei Scale 3 Pro not only reads body mass but also analyzes body composition, making it the perfect smart weighing scale at home.

To give you a context, most smart scales only use four-electrode to measure lower limb data, but the Scale 3 Pro utilizes eight-electrode to measure both your lower and upper limbs. On top of that, it uses both low and high frequencies for much more reliable body muscle and fat measurements.

This device was made with family-sharing in mind. Anyone at home can connect with the Scale 3 Pro via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to be able to transfer the data directly to the cloud without needing to open the app every single time.

Guest measurements can also be taken—perfect if you have guests over who want to get a quick body composition analysis. The best part? You can send them the complete report from the Huawei Health app to their phone via different ways like your preferred messaging apps or through Huawei Share.

The Scale 3 Pro doesn't feel intimidating to use at all. It dons a color with the impression of sunrise, resulting in an elegant softness. It's also made with tempered glass to avoid slipping. As for its handle that doubles as a sensor, it has a metal-like finish that adopts an embedded handle design. It also can hide the handle within the main body to save storage space, and easier to clean.

Once set up on the Huawei Share app, it's easy to get a hang of the smart scale. Simply grab the handle from the weighing scale and step on it so that the device can start getting your weight, body fat, and heart rate. Once done, the report will reflect on the mobile phone reflecting data like BMI, body fat rate, skeletal muscle mass, visceral fat, limb skeletal muscle, basal metabolic rate, body water, bone mineral content, protein, fat-free mass, and heart rate.

Unfortunately, only the BMI and heart rate metrics show the range of where you're currently at. Meaning, for the other body metrics, you'll have to rely on dear Google to know what the rest of the data you received means. I hope we see this updated on the next software update!

The device currently runs with three AA batteries that are included in the package. To avoid electronic wastage, I hope Huawei considers making rechargeable smart scales in the future. 💚
