I used a smartphone with no Google apps & it was okay: a Huawei Nova 7 SE 5G Review

by - Thursday, September 17, 2020

With 5G mobile services slowly rolling out in the country, Huawei seized the opportunity to be the first smartphone brand to launch the first mid-range phone in the country with 5G capability – the Huawei Nova 7 SE 5G smartphone. Of course, I had to get my hands on this device and check out how it can keep up with my lifestyle.

Unboxing

I got the Huawei Nova 7 SE 5G smartphone in Crush Green in the mail. Apart from the usual earphones, USB Type-C cable, power brick, and sim ejector pin, the unit also come with a TPU flexible phone case to keep the device fingerprint-free.

The built-in screen protector was also a nice touch since we don't have the liberty to visit a mall to have one installed right away. I appreciate how it's well-intact in the device and can stay there for a while as compared to other screen protectors that budge after a few times of using the phone.

Design

The first thing that I noticed on this smartphone is the gorgeous monogrammed version of the nova logo at its back. It complements the stunning metallic green finish of the phone's 3D glass surface. Since I'm right-handed, my thumb lands exactly where the side-mounted power button is. I find the integration of the fingerprint scanner with the power button an amazing idea because it made the phone unlocking experience extra seamless. The volume button is also located on the same side, making the thumb do all the work needed – whether it's unlocking the phone or adjusting the audio.

Aiming to achieve that bezel-less display, the Nova 7 SE features a punch-hole selfie camera for that unobstructed viewing experience. Also, props to Huawei for making the quad-camera at the back slightly embossed so that my pointer finger has a feel if it's already close to touching the camera's surface.

Display

Similar to my Huawei Y9 Prime experienceI also loved the Huawei Nova 7 SE's full HD display. I caught up on some YouTube vlogs using this phone and noticed that it was able to provide sharp, clear video details. Also, the screen-to-body ratio of 90.3 percent makes binge-watching on this mobile phone more enjoyable because of the greater display coverage.

Camera

As a lifestyle blogger, I appreciate having different camera options to cater to my photography needs. Because I'm not fortunate enough to own different kinds of mirrorless camera lenses, having the 2 MP macro camera, 2 MP bokeh camera, and an 8 MP ultra-wide-angle camera on top of the 64 MP main camera in one smartphone is indeed a gamechanger. There are times where I no longer felt the need to whip my mirrorless camera to capture our #quaranthings sitch at home.

BACK CAMERA

During the daytime, the quad-camera located at the back of the phone easily captures the details of the subject. I'm elated by the fact that Huawei renders the colors of the images closer to the actual subject as compared to before where the photos seem to appear warmer than they should be.

The camera magic reveals when taking shots at a low light setup. Whether the AI camera is enabled or not, the phone makes sure to retain as much detail from its subject. I was really surprised by how it was able to keep as much detail in the photo with little to no noise.

Minimal distortion can be observed on the photos taken with the ultra-wide-angle camera. Also, even if this camera, in particular, doesn't have a night mode, it still managed to brighten the image with less noise.

FRONT CAMERA

Similar to the quad-camera, the selfie camera also exceeds my expectation. May it be well-lit or a lowlight setup, it's capable of accentuating the image with extra exposure, all thanks to its 16 MP specification. The portrait mode can be a hit or miss but the results are wonderful if you get the setup right.

I also appreciate the fact that the beauty feature is capable of enhancing selfies without making it look over-filtered. As you can see in the image below, it managed to get rid of most of my hyperpigmentation in a snap. I'm soooo impressed!

To say that Huawei's Nova 7 SE cameras are fantastic is an understatement. I may actually have enjoyed them a little too much. lol My takeaway from using the phone's cameras is to get close to a nearby light source so that its AI camera will help produce illuminated images.

Battery

With my old smartphone, I had to charge it twice a day to make sure that I'm covered all day long. Happy to report that the Nova 7 SE was able to last a day or two of occasional social media and YouTube video watching!

The device also comes with a fast-charging power brick that's certified for safety by TÜV Rheinland. It's bigger than the average power brick but I'd definitely compromise if it can restore the charge of the Nova 7 SE to 70% in just half an hour. Plus, given the current situation, it will stay by my work desk until the pandemic is over.

... but wait, the phone has no Google apps?

It feels different not being to consume the Google products we know and love plus other entertainment apps like Netflix and Spotify. However, Huawei AppGallery figured out easy workarounds to be able to still enjoy some of these apps on the Nova 7 SE.

The phone comes with a Quick App Center where it houses all the recently opened websites via AppGallery. I was able to access Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and Gmail through this app.

Since Spotify is not available for download yet, I downloaded the Deezer app and signed up for a 30-day free trial. It seems like the stars have aligned because I've been meaning to get rid of my Spotify account due to technical issues from their end, then I discovered Deezer after.

Verdict

Living a Google-free life (ish) isn't a walk in the park because I live and breathe their apps on a daily basis. Heck, our company email is even run by Google. The birth pains caused by Huawei's transition to a new mobile app store can be a double-edged sword but I can't help but think of how this change will complement Huawei's ecosystem in the near future.

This phone is for you if you're not heavy users of social media apps or if you are willing to go down the Huawei rabbit hole. For sure I fall on the latter because I heard lots of great things about their laptops and tablets.

I would've loved to try the 5G connectivity of this phone, but I'm currently residing in the province which is why there's no chance for me to test it out. Here's to hoping that the 5G mobile services will rollout faster so that I can give it a try using this device soon as well!

The Huawei Nova 7 SE is currently sold for P17,819 at Huawei's Flagship Store in LazMall. To know more about this handset, you may visit their website here.
