PayMaya Offers Cashback for DFA Passport Application or Renewal

by - Sunday, August 23, 2020

Five months into the lockdown, I'm still a tad hopeful that I will be able to fly before the year ends to see my sister, brother-in-law, and newborn niece in Osaka, Japan. I also lowkey wanted a different work from home location for the remainder of the year if given the chance.

Early this year, I already had plans of renewing my passport during the second quarter of the year since my passport will expire by September. However, given the escalation of the pandemic situation, I temporarily held off the plan and weigh my plans depending on the turnaround of events in the coming months. Come July, I saw the news about PayMaya partnering with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and thought it would be the perfect time to reschedule my passport renewal since a few people will be interested to process their application at this point.

The Passport Renewal Process

After learning that slots had been reopened in the nearby DFA branch from my house, I visited http://passport.gov.ph to book an early appointment (to avoid the surge of people) and paid the renewal and delivery fee via PayMaya. When I saw that the link redirected to a secured PayMaya terminal, I already knew that a cashback is in store. After settling the payment, I got an SMS saying that I got P11.50 cashback for this transaction. It may not be a big amount, but getting this perk on top of a contactless, hassle-free transaction sure is already a good deal for me given our current sitch.

On the day of my appointment, it's still disappointing to see how a few people disregard social distancing as we wait to enter the mall premises. There were times I had to give a death stare to the person at my back for being too close to me. This person even had the nerve to borrow a pen. Like aren't you even aware that we're in the middle of a pandemic and you still had the gall to ask me for a pen? *rant over*

I used my PayMaya account to pay for my passport renewal application!
I applaud the DFA office for having a good system in place for passport applicants. Even inside their office, social distancing is strictly implemented and I was able to reach the first counter in less than five minutes to submit my requirements. After my documents were screened by the staff, I had to wait another five minutes to hand my documents to the staff at the second counter. A security guard was watching us just in case someone breaks the social distancing protocol or uses their phone by accident. And for the last step, I went to the last counter, where the cameras are, with a breeze. Applicants normally head to the courier counter after this step, but since I already settled my payment online, I was done with my passport renewal and spent a total of forty minutes in the DFA office! 🤩

In terms of delivery, while I expect a delay because of the lockdown, I didn't expect my passport to be delivered five weeks after my renewal application. Glad I wasn't in a hurry to get my hands on it or else I would've missed a flight if it was a normal day.

My ten-year passport may only serve as another valid ID or booklet at this point, but these pieces of papers allow me to have a little hope of filling them with travel stamps in the near future.
