How to score free coffee (and food) with the new Starbucks Rewards Program

by - Sunday, July 19, 2020

If you've been following me for quite some time already, you probably know that I'm an avid collector of Starbucks cards. My penchant for the limited and special edition cards grew bigger as time passes by. With the introduction of their new and improved Starbucks Rewards Program last July 17, I knew I had to head to the nearest branch and experience it myself. Let me take you through my experience! 😉

Before my Starbucks visit

I was asked to update my old password in-app and soon after, I saw myself navigating around the refreshed interface. It was a breeze going through each section and I found myself gushing by the idea that I can FINALLY reload my account in-app! All that's needed is to update my profile and connect my debit or credit card. My initial thought is that my coffee run is about to become faster and smoother in the coming days! 😍

At the Starbucks Branch

After filling up the contact tracing form via the QR code posted at the store's facade, the barista asked me if I have an unused load from my old card. As soon as he confirmed the Php 159 remaining balance on my account, he offered to transfer them to the new Starbucks card featuring the Siren as its design for absolutely FREE of charge! A Starbucks card normally needs to have a minimum of P300 load, but the transition to the new loyalty program allowed me to get the new, classic-looking Starbucks card for free.

With the new Starbucks Rewards, members can now get one Star with every Php25 spent on almost everything they buy in stores using their registered card or app. For every 100 Stars, customers can redeem a reward and choose among their favorite handcrafted beverage, pastry, or slice of cake on the house.
I also learned that a cash refund will be given to customers with a remaining balance of below P100. I also didn't miss the opportunity to grab the new star-shaped Pilipinas Starbucks card to commemorate this update. The barista told me to register these two cards in the app to start earning stars.

After registering, I am once again considered as a new member and I can collect two (2) stars for every P25 spent on all eligible purchases for the first seven (7) days starting on this day. I bought a grande Fantasy Tail Frappuccino for P190 and received 15.20 stars instead of 7.6 stars.

As I reflect on this new experience while sipping on my tropical frappe, I realized that the experience of transitioning to the new program is smooth as expected. The updated app was foolproof and I had an easy time navigating around it. Add to that the kind baristas who are willing to help you get started with the new program. Indeed, I encourage everybody to give the refreshed Starbucks Rewards program a try for a better coffee experience. I can't wait to reach 100 stars and score my "first" free coffee at Starbucks. (85 stars to go! 😅 )

For their next update, I hope that they can explore advance orders done via the app for faster transactions. I first heard of this feature during my visit to a Starbucks Hong Kong branch and thought it would be cool to have that similar feature locally. What do you think? 😊
