4 things I like about the ASUS ZenFone 5Q

I'm still in a mourning state because recently, my phone got heavily damaged after accidentally slipping my hand and fell into a bucket full of water. Having it fixed for three times already over the course of four years, I’ve decided to finally give up on this phone and search for a new one instead.

Given the situation, ASUS was in a right timing when they asked me to review one of the ASUS ZenFone 5 line smartphone, the ASUS ZenFone 5Q, also known as the ASUS ZenFone 5 Lite.

After giving it a spin for a week or two, I’ve rounded up the things I like about this new smartphone.

Camera

The camera of this phone didn’t fail in delivering high-quality photos, whether it may be the main front or back camera lens. During my three-week-long hands on, I’m deeply impressed with how fast it can capture a subject in auto mode. In times where I don’t feel like tinkering around the camera settings, I easily tap the focal point of my subject on the screen and shoot right away.

Aside from achieving the color accuracy of the subject taken, I also like the depth of the image in portrait mode. Compared to its predecessors, this phone can better detect the subject of the photo and blur the background naturally.

There’s also no questioning in the capacity of the phone when taking picturesque 120-degree photos outdoor. However, it isn’t as competitive in dim, indoor locations. This isn’t the case though with its main back camera since it can still take sharp photos despite a challenging light set up inside a room.

Screen Size and Display

I’ve recently found myself binging in Brooklyn Nine-Nine lately and watching it in a big, clear screen on the phone while traveling to work has been quite a treat for me.

With the ZenFone 5Q’s 6-inch, FHD (2160 x 1080) IPS display, not only I can watch a sitcom episode with a screen that is almost the size of my palm, it also has a crisp phone display that complements the high-resolution movies that I watch on Netflix. I’d vouch for its impressive display, guys! 😉

While I really like the big screen display for my entertainment time, it can also be a deal-breaker, too. Whenever I view my friends' Instagram stories on this phone, their photos and videos tend to expand making it distorted in the screen. I hope this is a problem that a software update can fix. #InstagramIsLife

Provided that I have big hands, I still hold this phone with my two hands because it has a slippery, metallic finish. Fret not though because this phone already comes with a clear bumper case.

Fingerprint scanner

Another win is the fingerprint scanner found at the back of this phone, just below the back camera lens. While this feature is already present in other smartphones in the market, the ZenFone 5Q made me realize how adding it at the back, instead of the front, is also beneficial for the user. To put it in a simple way, it isn't as awkward whenever I unlock the phone every time I want to view a phone notification.

In-screen Home and Multiple Tabs Button

It was quite an adjustment with this feature because I’m accustomed to actual buttons embossed on the button of the phone that I normally use. What’s amusing about this feature is that I can choose to lock it in the screen or just swipe it up whenever I feel the need to use it. It is practical in a sense that the space allotted in these buttons are used to increase the phone’s screen size.

For a lite version of the ZenFone 5 smartphone, this phone lived up to my expectation in terms of high-quality images, clear screen displays, and easy-to-familiarize-with advance phone features. While the screen isn’t a tailor fit to my daily lifestyle, I would definitely recommend this to multimedia enthusiasts out there who’d like to enhance their mobile photography game or to those whose lifestyle involves daily leisure over movies and series.
